Alert: The Station at the Top of the World

Alert: The Station at the Top of the World

Located only 817 km from the North Pole, and just 40 km south of the northernmost point in Canada, Canadian Forces Station (CFS) Alert is the most northerly, permanently inhabited location in the world. First established in 1950, the site has a long history of conducting important military operations and scientific research. Today, CFS Alert operates under the RCAF supporting Search and Rescue operations and critical environmental research, while playing a key role in protecting Canadian sovereignty in the Arctic.

Featuring artefacts that have never been displayed outside of CFS Alert, this exhibit explores the history of the site – from early arctic exploration to today’s scientific research and military operations. Community photo submissions showcase the longstanding tradition of posing with the Alert sign, and visitors are encouraged to continue the legacy by taking their own photos.

This exhibit was designed and developed by Carleton University Industrial Design student, Kole Tromp, in collaboration with the National Air Force Museum of Canada.
