Joint Task Force Afghanistan Air Wing

Joint Task Force Afghanistan Air Wing

Following the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center towers, the United States launched Operation Enduring Freedom to dismantle the Al-Qaeda terrorist network in Afghanistan and remove the Taliban regime from power. On October 7, 2001 Canada joined this effort, and on November 18th the Air Force deployed Strategic Airlift and Tactical Airlift Detachments. They would continue to play a vital role throughout the conflict by providing transport and surveillance capabilities to ground forces.

Learn about Joint Task Force Afghanistan Air Wing and role of air force personnel in a conflict that took the lives of 158 Canadians and saw courageous efforts from many of today’s serving CAF members.

Explore the rest of the Museum to visit the Camp Mirage Monument dedicated to those who lost their lives in service in Afghanistan, and see Chinook 147201 that served in Afghanistan and whose nose art, Miss Behavin’, is displayed inside the Museum.
